How Betting Works

Knowing when to call, raise, check or fold depends on the cards you have, as well as the type of Texas Hold’em game you are playing.  For instance Texas Hold’em can be played as:

  1. Fixed-Limit Games
  2. Pot-Limit Games
  3. No- Limit Games

The Following is a closer look at the rules for each type of Hold’em game –

Fixed Limit

When playing a fixed -limit game, this means that there is a limit placed on bets that can be made during each round.  For instance, let’s say you were playing at a $2 - $4 table.  For the first two betting rounds of the game, the maximum bet you or any other player would be able to make is $2, and on the last two betting rounds the maximum bet allowed would be $4.

For each round of betting, three raises are allowed, with each bet or raise set to the limit for that round.  This means that on first round the player who makes the first bet can either fold or bet $2.  The next player then has the option of folding, calling the $2, or raising $2, making the bet total to $4 at that point.  If the player chooses to raise, the next player must fold, call the $4 or raise it another $2, which would then make the bet for the first round worth a total of $6.

Pot Limit

When playing Hold’em with a pot limit, the minimum wager is set by the amount first given by the big blind bet, while the maximum poker bet for each game is based on the amount of money that is currently in the pot, which is first determined after all existing wagers are called.

To gain a better idea let’s say for example that there is $12 in the pot, and during the first round, the first player to bet wagers $6.  The second player may then choose to call the $6 or raise the bet up to an additional $24 (this can occur simply because the second player would need to call the bet of $6 before he or she would be able to raise it, which would mean that the pot is now worth $24 because both the first player and second player have added $6 to it.)  Thus, if the second player chooses to, he or she could add a maximum total of $30 to the pot, resulting in a change of the maximum bet.

Due to this fact, during each round of the game a bet size cannot decline because bets or raises made by players must equal or surpass the previous bet or raise.  This means that if a player chooses to bet or raise $6, the next minimum raise that the following player could make would be no less than $6.  Therefore, it is not possible for one player to raise $6, but only bet by $3.

The only exception to this rule is known as the “all-in”.  This is when a player chooses to wager all chips he or she has remaining.  For instance, if the player wagered all remaining chips as a raise, but it was a smaller amount than stated by the rules, this wager would still count, since the player can not obtain any more chips.

No Limit

Just like the pot-limit, in a no limit Hold’em game for each round the starting minimum bet is that which was set by the big blind wager.  The maximum bet, on the other hand, is individual to each player, as it is the amount of money that each player has on the table.

During each betting round, the bet size can not decline, and must either equal or surpass the previous bet or raise, as in the pot-limit game.  At any time during the betting round, any of the players are allowed to go all-in and wager all of their chips.  If a player chooses to do this, he or she can not be forced to call any more than the amount of the chips he or she has on the table, which means that they can not be “bet out” of a hand.

If however it happens that a player runs out of chips before the end of a hand, a “side pot” is created if more than one player still remains with chips.  This also applies to players who choose to go all-in, as these players can win from another opponent only the amount that he or she is “in” for (these rules also apply to the pot-limit game).

Don’t Forget the Rake

Most live and online poker rooms include a house rake with their games.  A Rake is a percentage of money that is taken from the pot for the place that hosts the game.  Sometimes this percentage will be a predetermined amount at some tables, while other times it could depend on the pot size.  Every place is different, so find out about how rake works at your online poker choice before playing.
